Poupart's Bakery is located off of Pinhook Road in the heart of Lafayette, yet when you visit you feel as if you have been transported into a village bakery in the French countryside. Mr. Poupart came to Louisiana specifically to work as a pastry chef after working in Paris, bringing his wife with him. In Louisiana, he discovered that his strong French accent was not only not a barrier, even in 1965, but was appreciated and complimented. He had to learn, however, that Louisiana French is a little different from the language he knew and that Louisiana French culture had its own proclivities as well: he adjusted his recipes to make the chocolate a little sweeter and the bread a little softer.
Sadly, fewer and fewer of the patrons are speaking French in the bakery these days, but the Poupart family still recognizes almost everyone that comes in. Don’t be afraid to flex your French-speaking tongue here: the staff and regular customers are delighted when someone new comes in with the greeting, “Bonjour.” After all, good French pastries taste that much better when accompanied by a little French speaking.
Poupart's Bakery distributes bread to markets throughout the region and their 28 employees bake around 500 loaves a day. Other specialty items include crawfish pies and a variety of preserves and canned goods, all hand-made in the store. Poupart’s makes anywhere from 15,000-30,000 King Cakes during Mardi Gras season and will ship them anywhere in the world. Stop in for a croissant and a cup of coffee while you read the paper and, on your way out, don't forget to grab some of the irresistible desserts to share with your family.
