The Acadiana Center for the Arts, the local arts center located in Downtown Lafayette that serves the eight-parish Acadiana region, has released their Season 9 series line-up. The season, consisting of three separate performance series, brings everything from live music, dance, improv, theatre, opera, movie series, and much more to Lafayette's Downtown. The season kicks off August 13, 2019, and goes through June 2020 with tickets going on sale August 5, 2019, to the public. Below we've compiled all the upcoming performances in date order as well as a brief description of each series.

AllStars Performance Series - AllStars presents world-class touring musicians from all genres. We introduce Acadiana to acts from award-winning artists and rising stars, bringing them to the stages at the James Devin Moncus Theater and Heymann Performing Arts Center.

Spotlight Performance Series - Turn by turn, Spotlight showcases live performances in theater, dance, and comedy, as well as the Cane Fire Film Series and the MET Opera live broadcast. Each Spotlight show is compelling, unique, and makes the broad spectrum of the arts more accessible to the public.

Louisiana Crossroads - For nearly 20 years, Louisiana Crossroads has shown how our unique culture and the rest of the world meet. Each Louisiana Crossroads show tells the stories of Louisiana’s rich culture and outstanding musicians.

Lyle Lovett and His Large Band

The iconic singer, songwriter, actor and producer returns to Lafayette with his large band for an evening of storytelling and music from his Grammy award-winning album. Best known for his work in country music, Lovett defies soloing, and his lifetime of work has incorporated folk, swing, blues, jazz and gospel music into his songs—all of it broadening the definition of American music. The four-time Grammy award winner has recorded 14 albums and has appeared in numerous roles on film and television.

Boogie on the Bayou

Pairing two multiple GRAMMY award winning groups whose distinct and original sounds in Louisiana music has thrilled and fascinated audiences around the globe, Boogie from the Bayou is the perfect kickoff to this Louisiana Crossroads season. Fronted by legendary artists Michael Doucet and Terrance Simien, who have been friends for nearly 30 years, this concert embodies the beautiful spirit of our unique south Louisiana heritage.

Lost Bayou Ramblers: On Va Continuer!

AcA will host the local premiere of Lost Bayou Rambler’s documentary, “On Va Continuer!” The Grammy Award-winning band pushes the boundaries of Cajun music to preserve French language and culture in Louisiana. The film is a look into the modern Cajun lifestyle and a realization that the “dying” language of Louisiana French may not be so dead after all. The band will perform following the film screening. Support for this show is provided by Southern Screen.

Sam Bush

Sam Bush is an American mandolinist who is considered the originator of progressive bluegrass music. Bush’s music career dates back to 1963. He was presented a Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Music Association (AMA), and has been awarded Grammys from his work with Emmylou Harris, Bela Fleck, Alison Krauss, Gillian Welch, Ralph Stanley, and Tim Blake Nelson for “O Brother Where Art Thou” in 2001.

Seratones

Seratones have been chasing those kinds of deep connections since 2016, when they first rocketed into the national spotlight with their breakout debut, ‘Get Gone.’ Rolling Stone called the album a “fitful collision of punk, soul and jazz echoing out of a shed strewn with whiskey bottles,” while Pitchfork praised the collection’s “soulful grease and punky grit.” The music earned the band dates on the road with artists as varied as St. Paul & The Broken Bones, Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, The Dandy Warhols, and Drive-By Truckers, along with festival slots from Hangout to Newport Folk Festival.

An Evening With Street Corner Symphony

Street Corner Symphony is a contemporary a cappella group based out of Nashville, Tennessee. They are best known for participating in NBC’s all-vocal competition, The Sing-Off. Street Corner Symphony has made their mark on the music world, recording albums, providing clinics for schools, hosting benefits for cancer, performing across the country and around the world, and even working with major artists including Ben Folds, Alison Krauss, and Take 6’s Claude McKnight. Their repertoire covers a wide range from rock and pop, to country and barbershop, appealing to the young and old alike.

Slovak Dances - 30 Years After The Velvet Revolution

November 17th of this year marks the 30th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution, which heralded the end of communism in former Czechoslovakia. To commemorate this important historical milestone, the Slovakian Honorary Consulate in Louisiana is organizing a celebration at the Acadiana Center for the Arts in Lafayette crowned by a concert of Peter Breiner, a world class composer, pianist, and conductor from New York City.

Born in Abbeville, Louisiana, Bobby Charles was a songwriter and recording artist best known for penning tunes as “See You Later Alligator,” “I Don’t Why I Love You But I Do,” “Walking To New Orleans,” and “Before I Grow Too Old.” In his own words, “I get and inspiration for a song, it’s like it’s been living with me all of my life and it comes out…it’s more like a spirit or something.” Join us as Roddie Romero and an his all-star band celebrate the Bobby Charles songbook for one sensational night featuring performances by Warren Storm, Shannon McNally, CC Adcock, Kelli Jones, Sonny Landreth, Yvette Landry, and many more.

Providing Acadiana with educational and inspiring performing arts programs since 2015, the kids at Wonderland Performing Arts are bringing a chill to the AcA with their production of Frozen Jr.  Complete with a Disney dance party to kick-off each show, and magical surprises throughout the show, this musical is a must-see for kids and the inner-kids in all of us!  Costumes are welcomed!

Matthew Whitaker Quartet

Matthew Whitaker is an 18-year-old jazz pianist. Blind since birth, he has performed at Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center, and the Apollo Theater. At the age of 10, Whitaker opened for Stevie Wonder and began a mentorship that quickly elevated him to fame. Whitaker’s music style blends jazz, R&B, funk, and classical music which can be heard on his most recent album titled, ‘Outta the Box.’ In 2018 The Root added Matthew to the list of 1 of 25 Young Futurist Leaders and was named as 1 of 7 rising stars for 2018 by USA Today network’s 201 Magazine.

Steve Riley’s International Accordion Kings

The accordion, a well-known instrument in South Louisiana, is an important part of many forms of traditional music throughout the world including Cajun & Creole, French Canadian, Jazz, Eastern European, Conjunto, and Polka. For this Louisiana Crossroads show, Cajun accordionist virtuoso Steve Riley presents a musical journey through many different accordion styles and cultures featuring some of today’s top accordionists in the world: Yves Lambert, Alex Meixner & Glenn Hartman, Geno Delafose and Josh Baca.

An Evening with Judy Collins

Judy Collins is an American singer and songwriter known for her eclectic tastes in the material she records (folk music, showtunes, pop music, and rock-and-roll) and for her social activism.  She won her first Grammy Award for Song of the Year with her rendition of Send In The Clowns.  She also received four other nominations throughout her career.  She first rose to stardom with her composition of Jonie Mitchell’s Both Sides, Now.

Aaron Diehl Trio

Aaron Diehl is considered a jazz virtuoso and composer. He is the 2014 Monterey Jazz Festival Commission Artist, becoming the youngest artist to receive this honor, and composed Three Streams of Expression, dedicated to pianist and composer John Lewis. He is the 2013 recipient of the Jazz Journalists Association Award for Up-And-Coming Artist and winner of the 2011 Cole Porter Fellowship from the American Pianists Association. Diehl has performed with artists like Warren Wolf, Lew Tabackin, Matt Wilson and Wycliffe Gordon.

The Instrumental Legacy of Dr. Tommy Comeaux

Dr. Tommy Comeaux was a musician, instrument collector, and inspiration for the Traditional Music Program at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. This concert will coincide with the release of a new UL Press book based on his famed collection of vintage stringed instruments. Sonny Landreth and many more of Tommy’s friends and admirers come together around these rare and beautiful instruments, joined by the young students of folk and traditional music who have benefitted from his legacy for an evening of new and old music on a few of the finest instruments in the world.

SYBARITE5 is the first string quintet ever to win the Concert Artists Guild International Competition. From Elgar to Radiohead and Visconti to Akiho, SYBARITE5’s eclectic repertoire and commanding performance style is turning heads throughout the music world. The quintet’s debut album Disturb the Silence, was released in 2011 and quickly reached the top ten on the Billboard charts. The group’s follow-up album, Everything in its Right Place, was released in 2012 at Carnegie Hall to critical acclaim. SYBARITE5 is also deeply committed to education and outreach as well as performance.

The sons of Gregg Allman (Devon Allman) and Dickey Betts (Duane Betts) have joined forces to form The Allman Betts Band. Their performance features new music, songs from their solo projects and classic Allman Brothers and Gregg Allman tunes in honor of the 50th Anniversary of The Allman Brothers Band. Brotherhood of Light, the “original San Francisco psychedelic show” is providing visuals and lighting for the evening. Brotherhood of Light has worked with The Allman Brothers, Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Jimi Hendrix, The Doors, Led Zeppelin, and The Who among others.

Lost to the world in the tragic Grand Theater shooting in Lafayette in July 2015, Jillian Johnson’s creative work was invaluable to our community – she had a way of making everything she did beautiful, unique, and special. From her music to her art, her home, and neighborhood, and co-founding Parish Ink and Red Arrow Workshop, Jillian’s attention to detail and artistic ability were like no other. Her former bandmates from The Figs come together with friends including Steve Riley, members of the Red Stick Ramblers, Woody Pines, and her family to honor her in this special evening of music and art to remember what a gift she truly was to all of us.
