For the first time in recent history, Mardi Gras is canceled. Due to the pandemic, communities around the state have put festivities on hold this year for the public's safety. Although South Louisiana won't be parading in the city streets or country neighborhoods, the spirit will stay alive at home for many. One zydeco trailblazer helps keep that flame lit by bringing the party virtually with a Carnival themed live stream event.

Accordionist and vocalist Terrance Simien and his Zydeco Experience will present their online concert entitled Mardi Gras Mambo this Saturday evening. The band's first gig in a year will include interviews, plenty of holiday tunes, and special guest artist Marcella Simien. Tickets for the two-time Grammy award winner's pandemic proof in-home party are available through www.mandolin.com. A link to the roots music website's box office is listed below.

Plenty of Creole carnival sounds will be heard in this edition of Lafayette Weekly. You'll listen to several tracks from Simien's latest album, Ancestral Grooves, as well as recordings from his past catalog. Also in the mix, songs by Marcella Simien and her Lovers, zydeco man Chubby Carrier, and Louisiana French fiddler Jourdan Thibodeaux.
