Although most Mardi Gras events have been canceled due to the recent peak in covid-19 cases, folks in Lafayette are still finding ways to celebrate. Whether it’s at home or at regulated outdoor venues, there is plenty of great Louisiana music to catch this week.
Lost Bayou Rambler founder and singer Louis Michot has proved to be one of our area’s most prolific players in French music. If leading and fronting his Grammy award winning group wasn’t enough, the famed fiddler also heads his own label and an avant garde Cajun side project, Michot’s Melody Makers.
Corey Ledet’s newest album simply entitled Zydeco is set to be released this Friday on Michot’s Nouveau Electric Records. The two are celebrating with an online concert that same evening. The livestream event will feature Ledet sitting in with the Melody Makers along with New Orleans based singer/songwriter and cellist, Leyla McCalla.
For this week’s playlist I’ll be featuring tracks from Corey Ledet’s large discography while in anticipation of the release is his new album. I also included the latest from Michot and Ledet’s Soul Creole, a few from the Pine Leaf Boys, and some vintage Wayne Toups. You’ll hear Leyla McCalla’s “Les Plats Sont Tous Mis Sur La Table,” “The Attakapas Trail/Reel de Nez Picquйs” by Joel Savoy and Kelli Jones, and a couple of Mardi Gras classics.
