A tribute to one of country music’s greatest stars, Merle Haggard, will take place on Sunday evening at the Hideaway. The all-star band salute will feature Pine Leaf Boys Thomas David and Drew Simon, Daniel Coolik of the Revelers, and fiddler Kelli Jones. This will be the first of a series of country tributes taking place this month led by Jones.
The Hideaway will host some more gritty western sounds this weekend with Acadiana songwriter Mike Dean on Friday and Texas troubadour Johnny Nicholas on Saturday. Dustin Gaspard and his Freetown Sound return to the outdoor stage at the Grouse Room on Saturday night. The rock and soul outfit will be joined by frequent collaborator, local pop singer Sarah Russo.
You’ll hear all of these artists on this edition of Lafayette Weekly. A couple of tracks from Kelli Jones and Daniel Coolik’s latest project, Spirited Melancholy, “La Vie Est Courte,” by the Pine Leaf Boys, and the title track to Johnny Nicolas’ new album, “Mistaken Identity,” are all in this week’s playlist. Songs by DG & The Freetown Sound, Mike Dean, and Sarah Russo’s cover of The Proclaimer’s “500 Miles” are all also in the mix.
