For nearly 30 years, Dege Legg has been a staple in the Lafayette music scene. Legg fronted the long-standing South Louisiana rock outfit Santeria throughout the 90s while also releasing self-produced blues albums. The singer/songwriter doubles as a writer and has published two books and countless articles as an independent journalist. His is talents on guitar and dobro led to a stint with C.C. Adcock’s Lafayette Marquis before he formed the progressive Black Bayou Contrukt.
After years of exploring different creative avenues, Legg dove into his modern take on down-home blues and began recording as Brother Dege. His “Too Old To Die Young” was handpicked by iconic filmmaker Quintin Tarantino to drive the climax in 2012’s Django Unchained. The widespread attention has kept the guitarist busy recording and touring around Europe and the United States.
Brother Dege will perform live via Facebook this Friday for Downtown Alive’s House Session. I’ve put together a playlist that examines the vast catalog of music made by the veteran underground rocker. You’ll hear Santeria’s “Year if the Knife,” “In Search Of,” by Black Bayou Contruk, and the hypnotic “Isolation Drills.” Also in the mix are tunes by zydeco accordionist Corey Ledet, Cajun fiddler Louis Michot, and latest single from Brother Dege, “the Early Morn.”
