St. Landry Parish is now home to a new French immersion school for children. The Académie Franco-Louisianaise de Sunset aims to help preserve our area’s dying language through education and cultural experiences. Many of our local francophone artists are joining together for a benefit to help the new school and its vision.

One of the most successful musicians to ever emerge from Lafayette has also been one of the leading advocates for French preservation. Zachary Richard started recording and touring in the 1970s and has since sold millions of records, mainly in French-speaking Canada. The singer helped launch the highly successful French Immersion program in Lafayette and has long been considered one of our area’s most important cultural ambassadors to the world.

Sweet Cecilia, Bonsoir Catin, the Huval-Fuselier Cajun Band, and the Feufollet Trio with Jourdan Thibodeaux are set to perform alongside Richard on Saturday, February 1st at Vermilionville. To purchase tickets for the fundraiser visit the academy’s website at

For this week’s playlist, I’ll be featuring several tracks from Zachary Richard from his large body of work including tunes from his earliest recording and his breakthrough French hit record Cap Enragé. This French-heavy mixtape will also include songs from Jourdan Thibodeaux, Bonsoir Catin and a few from Feufollet.
