Hailing from Vermilion Parish, Michael Juan Nunez has been one of our area’s most sought after guitar players since the 90s. He’s toured and recorded with some of Louisiana’s most celebrated musicians including Dr. John, Ani Difranco, and international Cajun pop star Zachary Richard.
His 2016 release Rise shows Michael Juan bringing blues into a new century. Nunez comes out swinging on the opening track “Betta” with heavy guitar, electronic drums and distorted vocals that are reminiscent of fellow Louisiana rocker and collaborator Dege Legg. The eclectic album moves into acoustic ballads and swamp pop soul in the style of his contemporaries like Roddie Romero and C.C Adcock.
For this week’s playlist I put together a mix of MJN’s catalog along with some music from the other artists mentioned above. You’ll hear his take on the Slim Harpo classic “King Bee”, the country blues “Don’t Mind Gettin’”, and “Betta”. Nunez and his band The American Eletric will perform at Artmosphere on Saturday, April 20.
