Social media platforms have probably never been more active than they have been these past few weeks. People are turning to their Facebook and Instagram accounts more than ever to make up for the lack of in-person interaction. As a cousin of mine mentioned, “physical distancing” is a much more accurate term than “social distancing.” One place many of us are meeting is on streaming concert threads.
Kelli Jones, my bandmate in Feufollet, is one of many local musicians who has been creative with selling their performances in this new medium. “Covered 19” is a series of covers done by Jones along with some friends and longtime collaborators.
The daily music post has gained a quick and loyal following, with Jones releasing a new video every day until April 19. Let’s hope things will have changed for the better by then.
For this edition of Lafayette Weekly, I’m going to feature songs reinterpreted by the singer/songwriter and fiddler. You’ll hear the great vintage French pop song turned stripped-down string duet on “Toi tu joue à l’amour,” and the classic Vin Bruce Cajun waltz “Clair de la lune,” morphed into a modern Louisiana rocker. West coast country singer Caleb Klauder’s “Hole In My Heart” en français as well as the Acadiana radio smash “I’ll Be There.” I’ll pair many of these cover tunes with their original versions to showcase how well Kelli can weave through different musical genres.
