For close to 20 years the Louisiana Crossroads Series has given our local artists an opportunity to entertain their core audience in a conceptual setting. Opposed to the dives and dancehalls where these musicians are often heard, the Acadiana Center for the Arts theater provides a much more engaging concert experience for both the performers and attendees.

This weekend’s Two-Night Showcase of Non-Traditional Music in South Louisiana is a bit out of the norm for a LA Crossroads show. As the title suggests, don’t expect any accordions or fiddles for either of these nights. Current curator and famed Cajun musician/producer Joel Savoy has brought some fresh ideas to the popular performance series and this weekend couldn’t be a better example.

Friday night’s performance will include two of the most celebrated musicians to come out of New Orleans in recent years as well as a Lafayette legend. Renowned singer/cellist Helen Gillet, and the ever-sweet yet intense indie darling Julie Odell will share the stage with experimental saxophone giant Dickie Landry. Saturday night will have a similar format with up and coming NOLA glam rockers Tashe and the Psychedelic Roses followed by Hub City native guitar wizard Sarah Lipstate aka Noveller. The two-night showcase will end with a big finale with Brass Bed and their MAAM Records collective including Allison Bohl’s Kind Cousin and garage rockers Carbon Poppies

This week’s playlist might be my favorite yet. I started things off with some catchy rock n’ roll from Tasche & The Psychedelic Roses and Carbon Poppies before showcasing a track from each of Brass Bed’s extensive discography that ends with their spacey interpretation of a Cajun waltz from 2011’s Color Sessions. “La berceuse du vieux voyageur” leads into a couple of French songs by Helen Gillet then flows into a beautiful set of lush ambient soundscapes from Noveller and Dickie Landry.
