Lafayette’s favorite Tex-Mex group returns to the Hub City on Sunday, August 11. Led by legendary bajo sexto player Max Baca, Los Texmaniacs have established themselves as perhaps the world’s premiere conjunto band. Catch them with special guest Steve Riley at Atmosphere starting at 7:00 pm.
Max Baca was born in Albuquerque, NM and was raised in a household filled with music. His father was an aspiring accordionist which led to Baca learning the instrument at a very early age. He eventually formed his own band and gained plenty of attention to the point where he got an invitation by the King of Tejano. Max made his way to Texas to play bajo sexto (a type of 12 string guitar) with the world-famous Flaco Jiménez and his band.
Since that time, Baca has toured with the Tex-Mex supergroup Texas Tornados, formed Los Texmaniacs, and recorded with countless acts including The Rolling Stones. The Grammy award-winning quartet has stayed busy since their inception, playing in a mix of dancehalls, performing arts centers, and festivals. This helped perfect their stagecraft which led to their highly respected reputation as performers and ambassadors. The group can seamlessly keep audiences informed and entertained whether at a club or theater.
You’ll hear a good bit of Tex-Mex from the Maniacs as well as some local artists in this week’s playlist. Tracks include The Rolling Stones’ “Sweethearts Together” feat. Max Baca and Flaco Jimenez, Clint West’s classic Cajun/Tejano fused rock rendition of “Bayou Pon Pon”, and a couple of boleros from the Texmaniacs. Also in the mix is Queen Ida’s conjunto flavored zydeco “Comment Ça Va?” as well as some Steve Riley, Chris Ardoin, and the new single from Sean Bruce.
