A musical chameleon, J. Burton has been a prominent figure of the Lafayette music scene over the past 20 years. He has fronted some of the area’s most popular indie outfits and has even produced some as well. This Friday he’ll be performing solo as Grand Nathaniel at the Blue Moon opening for Camps and Pet Fangs.
Burton might be most known for his work with his folk-rock group Dire Wood. The band was a staple of the local music scene throughout the early 2000s, but when the group split, Burton switched from acoustic ballads to upbeat synth-pop with FIGHTS!. After FIGHTS!, he carried on with the synthesizer in hand to ensemble prog-rockers Grand Nathaniel and the Ghosts. Never afraid of change, J. is now performing solo as simply Grand Nathaniel. Under his new name, the singer-songwriter released his first single last year.
Most of this week’s playlist is dedicated to J. Burton’s extensive discography. You’ll hear tracks from Dire Wood, FIGHTS!, The Ghosts and a couple of songs from Brass Bed’s debut, an album he produced. Also in the mix are the latest from Houma-based pop group Pet Fangs and Lafayette’s Camps.
