Not many groups are able to enjoy a career in music with a fan base that’ll pick up and go along with you on tour. Entering their 30th year, Donna the Buffalo is one of those bands, and their “Herd” are still right there with them. The quintet will be performing at Warehouse 535 this Thursday, January 10.
Hailing from Trumansburg, New York, the Americana jam band has never been afraid of experimenting with mixing genres, and one of their biggest influences is South Louisiana. Not being shy about their love for creole country has made Lafayette a frequent tour stop throughout their career. Most of their sets include a few zydeco numbers with founding member Tara Nevins on accordion or washboard. Though if you’re looking to dance, get ready for a marathon. It wouldn’t be unlike the group if guitarist Jeb Puryear would take one of these double clutch two-steps into a free-form jam that could last over ten minutes.
For this week’s playlist, I compiled tracks from Donna the Buffalo’s extensive catalog including “Killing a Man” from 2018’s Dance in the Street. I also included some songs from Preston and Keith Frank, the New York folk-rockers’ close friends and collaborators. To finish off the mixtape I added tracks from other artists playing around Lafayette like Cedric Watson and Julie Odell.
