Some music fans in Acadiana might be having the summertime blues. Lots of our local artists hit the road around this time of year which can leave our local clubs a bit quiet on the weekends. That being said, Lafayette's premier Independence Day celebration is back again this year with one of zydeco's most beloved ambassadors and an ambitious young soul singer.
Dustin Gaspard (aka DG) and his r&b outfit The Freetown Sound have been one of Lafayette's busiest bar bands as of lately. The Kaplan born singer and guitarist recently received the SOLO Songwriters Festival scholarship which threw the budding songsmith in writing sessions with some of Louisiana's most successful touring and recording artists. This year also marked his debut at Festival International and released The Freetown Sound's EP entitled Microphone Inheritance, Part 1. Gaspard will open for creole accordion master and Grammy winner Chubby Carrier and his Bayou Swamp Band at Uncle Sam's Jam on Wednesday evening along with DJ RV.
For this week's playlist, I created a 4th of July mix along with tracks from the artists performing at this year's Uncle Sam's Jam. You'll hear cuts from Steve Miller and The Grateful Dead alongside some other American themed classic rock standards. Several songs from Dustin are mixed in with James Brown's "Living in America" as well as a few from Chubby Carrier including a Dead cover.
