Two folk giants will perform together this weekend for what will surely be a magical night of music. Most of us are familiar with one of these famed musicians. Dirk Powell has been a vital member of the Cajun and Creole scene for over 30 years while also lending his hand to a large, diverse list of artists such as Joan Baez and Jack White. Powell will join Grammy award-winning multi-instrumentalist and singer Rhiannon Giddens at Artmosphere this Friday evening.
Giddens first made waves in the music industry back in 2005 with the birth of her group the Carolina Chocolate Drops. The band formed after a meeting at the Black Banjo Gathering in Boone, North Carolina and quickly gained attention for their interpretations of nearly forgotten African-American old-time and blues tunes. As a solo artist and with the Drops, Giddens has stayed consistently busy with putting out new music and touring while also collaborating with countless artists such as New Orleans legend Allen Toussaint and the traditional Irish sextet Dervish. The North Carolina native recently released a new album to critical acclaim with Italian jazz musician Francesco Turrisi entitled There Is No Other.
I'll be featuring mainly selections from Rhianna Giddens' large catalog in this week's playlist. You'll hear a couple of tracks from the Carolina Chocolate Drops' Grammy-winning Genuine Negro Jig, the banjo-driven title-track to her new album, and her vocals on Toussaint's take on the Duke Ellington blues "Rocks In My Bed". Also in the mix are some tunes from some other artists performing this week including songs from Dirk Powell and even some folky Floyd in honor of the laser show at the Heymann Center on Friday.
