One of the most sought after singers and fiddlers in Cajun-music, Courtney Granger has been a vital part to some of the genre's most celebrated groups. A nephew to the legendary Dewey Balfa, Granger has carried on the prairie sound of his family's musical legacy. While spending most of his time on stage sharing the microphone with Wilson Savoy and Drew Simon in the Pine Leaf Boys, Granger has also maintained an important role in Balfa Toujours. A few of years ago Courtney released a highly anticipated country album produced by Dirk Powell that received rave reviews and helped to reestablish him as one of our area's top vocalists.

Born and raised in Eunice, LA, Courtney was drawn to the music of his family at an early age. He quickly mastered the fiddle stylings of the Balfa Brothers and naturally obtained a deep vocal timbre very similar to his uncle and the band's guitarist Rodney. Praised as a prodigy of the music and a new ambassador to the culture, Courtney was soon busy as a musician performing with Balfa Toujours and even Feufollet in their early years. After Cedric Watson's departure from the Pine Leaf Boys, Courtney was asked to join the band as the band's new fiddler and vocalist. Granger would eventually record his first solo effort as an adult with the help of famed American roots musician Dirk Powell and record man Joel Savoy. The 30-something-year-old singer released Beneath Still Waters in 2016 on Valcour Records. An avid fan of classic country crooners like George Jones and Merle Haggard, the album showcases Granger as a singer on par with his heroes with the sound of the jukebox music heard in the dives and dancehalls of South Louisiana.

I compiled a playlist of Granger's music through the years. You'll hear mainly tracks from his country solo album along with cuts from the Pine Leaf Boys and a couple from Balfa Toujours. Courtney will be working a double on Saturday, June 29 at Artmosphere. He will perform a country set on his own and then on fiddle with his Cajun cousins. The fais do do is scheduled to start at 9:00 pm, but as always they'll probably kick things off closer to 10:00 pm.
