If you are looking to catch some zydeco in Hub City this week, you have nothing to worry about. Though our busy October festival season is done, November doesn’t have us slowing down a bit. I’ll be highlighting several dances for this edition of Lafayette Weekly.
The annual Thanksgiving Zydeco Food Drive will take place at Miami Moon on the Simcoe Strip this Wednesday evening. A second line parade will kick things off at 5:00 pm followed by the now legendary concert featuring over 20 local Creole and r&b artists starting at 7:30 pm. Proceeds from the benefit organized by Don “Apollo” Wilson will help local families in need during the holiday season.
If you can’t make it out until the weekend to two-step you have several options to choose from. The Southern Screen Film Festival not only showcases work by our regional filmmakers and those from abroad, but they have also been dedicated to inviting out of town guests to experience the way we pass a good time. Their after-parties for this year’s event features two of the most exciting emerging groups in zydeco.
Friday night’s dance will be hosted by Soul Creole, a supergroup fronted by accordion master Corey Ledet with Grammy award-winning fiddler Louis Michot and his wife, author, and French advocate Ashlee Michot. The young but veteran multi-instrumentalist Mike Broussard, and his NuEdition Zydeko band, will keep festival attendees and our visiting film industry guests dancing at the Blue Moon.
This week’s playlist will be heavy on the zydeco with a bit of pop from New Orleans/Lafayette-based festival favorites Royal Teeth and indie-folk duo Jelly Toast. You’ll hear tracks from Jelly Toast members Julie Odell and Givers’ Tiffany Lamson, and some swing out and Creole country from J.J. Caillier. Also in the mix is Lil’ Nathan’s bilingual radio hit “L’Argent” as well as some classic sounds from his father, Nathan Williams and the Zydeco Cha Chas.
