Not only does fall bring us so many of our beloved festivals, but it is also the return of many concert series in the area. Last Friday we saw the start to the fall edition of Downtown Alive! and this Thursday will be the opening night of Rhythms on the River. Wayne Toups kicks this season off with his band ZydeCajun.
The popular Thursday night attraction is very much in the same vein as Downtown Alive!. Each season has a good mix of local modern Cajun and Creole groups as well as rock, country and soul acts. The event also has food and drinks available from nearby restaurants like Romacelli and City Club. Though Rhythms invites attendees to bring a lawn chair, there is plenty of space to dance in front of the stage.
For this week’s playlist, I’ll mainly focus on Wayne Toups and choose songs from his large discography. You’ll hear favorites like his version of the Louisiana French classic “Johnny Can’t Dance,” local Cajun rock hit “Fish Out of Water,” and a couple from his Grammy-winning album with Courtbouillon. Also in the mix are tracks from New Orleans singer/songwriter Julie Odell, accordionist Kyle Huval, and swamp soul man Gregg Martinez.
