The nationally recognized Acadian Wind Symphony, under the direction of Gerald Guilbeaux, presents its annual summer concert “ACROSS THE MILLENNIUM” on Saturday, July 2. This concert of symphonic wind music will feature a varied program of music composed between 1950 and 2019.

Symphony No. 3 “Slavyanskaya” by Ukrainian composer Boris Kozhevnikov was written in 1950 but was discovered by the West only after the collapse of the Soviet Union and the Iron Curtain in the 1990s. The four-movement symphony enjoys popularity in the U.S. thanks to an edition that former United States Marine Band commander and Louisiana native, John R. Bourgeois created for American bands in 1995. Other works on the program include “Sinfonia Nobillissima” by Robert Jager and Martin Ellerby’s “Paris Sketches” along with a 2019 composition by Steve Danyew, the very poignant “Into the Silent Land.”

Guest conductors on the program are Jason Missal and Scotty Walker. Dr. Missal is the Associate Director of Bands at the University of Louisiana and leads the Pride of Acadiana Marching Band. Mr. Walker is the Director of Bands at the award-winning Lafayette High School and was recently named Teacher of the Year in Lafayette Parish.

The fifty-six-member Acadian Wind Symphony is a select group of musicians, invited to perform symphonic wind music of the highest caliber. Though many of the members are professional musicians and/or music educators, many other walks of life are represented within the ranks of the organization. The Acadian Wind Symphony was the 2021 winner of the American Prize - Community Band Division. The American Prize is the nation's most comprehensive series of non-profit competitions in the performing arts, unique in scope and structure, designed to recognize and reward the best performing artists, ensembles, conductors, composers, and directors in the United States, based on submitted recordings.

Enjoy “ACROSS THE MILLENNIUM” in the air-conditioned comfort of the Ducrest/Gilfry Auditorium at Angelle Hall on the UL Campus. The free concert will begin at 7:30 pm on Saturday, July 2nd.
