Louisiana is well-known for its Cajun and Creole dance music, waltzes and lively two-steps featuring accordions and fiddles. But there is also a tradition of la musique de la maison, or music of the home.

During the solemn Advent period, the Catholic Church traditionally frowned upon the playing of instruments and couple dancing. Religious cantiques may have been sung in keeping with the season, but songs about relationships, drinking songs, and comical songs were sung as well. Many of these songs can be traced to their roots in France.
