About Golden Gloves

Since the first Golden Gloves tournament in 1923, the Golden Gloves of America, Inc. and its member franchises have provided an opportunity and environment for young athletes to develop lifetime skills. Hundreds of dedicated administrators, coaches, trainers and counselors have unselfishly spent countless times and effort to assist young people in the development of personal character and athletic skills. The Golden Gloves program has led the way in promoting amateur boxing in the United States and has produced the majority of competitors for America’s boxing teams in the Pan-Am and Olympic Games.

Many former Golden Gloves® amateur boxing champions have gone on to become outstanding boxers and role models in our country.  Former Heavyweight Champion of the World, Joe Louis was a Golden Gloves Champion in 1934.  Many other champions including Muhammed Ali (1959 and 1960); Sugar Ray Leonard (1973); “Marvelous” Marvin Hagler (1973); Michael Spinks (1974); Thomas “Hitman” Hearns (1977); Johnny Tapia (1984); Mike Tyson (1984); Evander Holyfield (1984); Oscar De La Hoya (1989) and Jermain Taylor (1998 and 1999) all got their start in the Golden Gloves tournaments.

Several of the winners in different weight classes from Louisiana have won this championship such as Eric Griffin, Russell Roberts, Donald Stokes, Aristead Clayton Jr., Roman George and Anthony Stephens.

The 2017 National Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament of Champions is being sponsored by Townsquare Media, Louisiana Governor’s Council on Physical Fitness & Sports, Lafayette Travel, Lafayette Consolidated Government, CAJUNDOME and the Ragin’ Cajun Boxing Club

A Message From Louisiana's Lieutenant Governor Billy Nungesser

Billy NungesserOn behalf of the State of Louisiana, I welcome you to Louisiana and Lafayette! It is truly an honor and pleasure to host the National Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament of Champions.

Here in Louisiana, we take pride in being the birthplace of jazz, Cajun and zydeco music, and in being a key player in the history and development of American blues, country and rock and roll. You’ll need the workout dancing to all our music offers, because Lafayette and Louisiana also boast two indigenous, world-acclaimed and absolutely delicious cuisines, Cajun and Creole, incorporating seafood harvested from one of the Western Hemisphere’s most robust fisheries, the Gulf of Mexico. Simply put, you are in one of the world’s favorite destinations for great food and music, and I hope you packed a hearty appetite and your dancing shoes.

Around every corner, you’ll find our food and music, as well as an exciting history and colorful culture rooted in ancestry formed from a fusion of world cultures. We’re as close to a foreign country as you’ll find in America. It’s no wonder Louisiana has been breaking its own visitation records for several consecutive years running.

I encourage you to make free time during your trip to experience Lafayette. Venturing out by car around the area will put you among American alligators in scenic cypress swamps and Gulf coastal marsh habitats; on the grounds of majestic antebellum plantation mansions dotting the Mississippi River; in museums and cultural attractions telling our diverse stories; and in walkable small-town centers offering great shopping and the works of native artists, craftsmen and even local craft brewers and distillers. Details on the broad spectrum of things to do in and around Lafayette and Louisiana are found at

I want to wish all those competing the best of luck in the Golden Gloves Boxing Tournament of Champions and to all those attending and visiting, please enjoy your stay in beautiful Lafayette! I thank you on behalf of the people of Lafayette and Louisiana for spending time with us this year. Have a great time!

Billy Nungesser
