Tucked away in more than 100 wooded acres, you’ll discover the Acadiana Park Natures Station a nature center and raised boardwalks perfect for a short walk through the oaks, cedars, and palmettos. For adventure-seekers wanting to pick up the pace, the nearby mountain bike trails are especially fun. Moncus Park is a supporter-funded nonprofit dedicated to developing and maintaining 100 acres of green space in Lafayette. Today Moncus Park is not just a park — it’s a tourist attraction and economic generator with an impact on the fiscal, social, economic, environmental, cultural, physical, and mental health of Acadiana and its residents. If you think the park ends at the back treelined, you are wrong! There are 50 more acres of green space with 23 acres of hiking trails. Get in shape while enjoying 100 beautiful acres of Lafayette’s Moncus Park. Balmy weather is practically assured year-round in Lafayette, and there’s nothing more refreshing than a dip in cool water when the temperatures rise. Public pools offer an easy way to cool off in the summer at the Martin Luther King Recreation Center Pool and the Girard Park Pool in the center of town near the University of Louisiana at Lafayette campus. The Olympic-sized indoor, heated Earl J. Chris Pool at the Robicheaux Recreation Center is open year-round. In addition, Moncus Park, Parc San Souci, Parc Lafayette, and Girard Park all offer splash pads. Farther out from the center of Lafayette are splash pads at the Broussard Sports Park and Palmetto Island State Park near Abbeville.

There are a host of special wellness events happening in Lafayette throughout the year, and they all come with a heavy dose of Louisiana culture and fun.
Start the year with the annual spring Zydeco Marathon, a two-day event over the first weekend in March. The USATF-certified race includes a 26.2 full marathon, a 13.1 half marathon, a two-person relay, a 5K run, and a one-mile run for children ages 12 and under, with proceeds benefitting St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. And because it’s Lafayette, Sunday brings the Zydeco Finish Line Festival with live music, great food, and drink options!

The sleepy, picturesque Bayou Vermilion rolls through Lafayette and south into Vermilion Parish. To share the beauty of this unique bayou, Lafayette Travel and the Bayou Vermilion District have partnered to offer a three-day paddle with overnight camping, food, and entertainment. Paddlers will travel more than 50 miles from the Acadiana Park Nature Station in Lafayette to Palmetto Island State Park south of Abbeville.

If biking’s your thing, you won’t want to miss the annual Cycle Zydeco that corresponds with Lafayette’s Festival International de Louisiane. The festival occurs the last weekend in April, but the five-day cycling event, which celebrates Cajun and Créole culture throughout the region, will be held from April 8-12, 2026. Cyclists will enjoy our award-winning cuisine, live music, swamp tours, crawfish boils, regional history, and so much more. And if you’re a cyclist who prefers flat terrain, you’re in luck. No hills to scale here, and routes range from 36 to 62 miles.

Another great adventure tied to a Lafayette music festival is the annual Tour de Atakapas 6K and 9K runs on Oct. 18, 2026, a project between T.R.A.I.L. (Transportation Recreation Alternatives in Louisiana) and Festivals Acadiens et Créoles to raise money for the festival and community parks and recreational facilities.

The Cajun Road Runners Club hosts special runs year-round, including the Cajun Cup 10k, one of the oldest races in Acadiana. Held in the fall, this race helps support the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns Cross Country and Track teams
