Try Googling "snow cones" and see what comes up. It pretty much lands you in Baltimore. The Maryland city claims to be one of the originators of the desert, dating back to the Industrial Revolution when ice was shipped by the truckloads to southern states.
Louisiana claims home to the "sno-ball", which is very similar, yet much different from its icy cousin. Like the po'boy sandwich and other renowned cuisine staples from the Crescent City, the sno-ball has humble origins.
In the early 1930s, New Orleans resident Ernest Hansen created an ice-shaving mechanism to help create the treat, which at that time was solely for his family. Unlike similar previous versions of the dessert, which were more coarse ice concoctions, the Hansen icy creation was lighter and fluffy. There began the renowned Hansen's Sno-Bliz, which has operated since 1934 on Tchoupitoulas Street. Not a bad run for a business that has served desserts to the American public since the Great Depression.
Here in the Lafayette area, the sno-ball, "snowball" or even "cold cup," can be found everywhere from spring through fall, with just about every mouth-staining flavor available from cherry to cheesecake. You can also order traditional flavors or "stuffed" with decadent ice cream fillings.
