While Carencro comes from the Creole name for buzzard, it’s a beautiful community with rolling hills and horse farms. Louisiana is one of the country’s top horse-producing states, its grassy prairies home to some 200,000 horses. Located north of I-10 along I-49, Carencro is home to a historic downtown area with local landmark St. Peter Roman Catholic Church. Its stunning Baroque altar was hand-carved in Belgium and brought to the United States in 1893 for the Chicago’s World Fair and was later donated to the church. In Carencro, you can grab a great pizza, fresh Greek cuisine, or a juicy burger with a Bloody Mary. Or, sit down to a meal better than grandma’s with comfort foods like bread pudding, fried catfish with crawfish etouffee, and smothered okra with shrimp.
