Lafayette Travel has released the third episode of its original video series Gumbo People, which highlights the artists, culture bearers, and professionals who help shape the parish’s cultural identity. The latest episode spotlights Michelle “Malentina” Colon, a dynamic performer, producer, and cultural advocate whose creativity and passion have left a lasting mark on Lafayette’s arts and Latin community.

Malentina

Colon, a multi-talented performer, producer, and cultural advocate whose work has enlivened Lafayette’s creative scene for years. Known for her bold stage presence and performances, Colon blends music, theater, and visual storytelling in ways that challenge convention while celebrating the Latin community. Her Gumbo People feature reflects on the role of performance in shaping identity, her passion for empowering artists, and her belief in Lafayette as a place where creative expression thrives.

“For a long time, I thought my passion and strong personality were negatives. Moving to Lafayette and pursuing music helped me see that they’re actually my greatest strengths. That realization gave me the confidence to step fully into who I am as Malentina. Now, through my music, I want to pass that same sense of empowerment on to others,” says Michelle 'Malentina' Colon.
