Robert Dafford — Artist and MuralistFor more than four decades, muralist Robert Dafford has been transforming blank walls into stories that line city blocks. His work spans continents, but much of his heart and brushstrokes remain rooted in Lafayette and the culture of Acadiana.

“I’ve always been drawn to big scale,” he says. “When you stand in front of a mural, you feel it. I want that physical impact, and I try to fill the work with positive energy. There’s already enough negativity in the world. My job is to counteract that.”

That mission started early. As a five-year-old, he remembers copying illustrations from a book of Norse mythology and realizing that mastering art would be a lifelong pursuit. By high school, he was painting signs on trucks and buildings around town while learning from older painters about working on brick and concrete. Those jobs revealed something larger. He had both the skill and the calling to create monumental works that gave back to his community.

Over the years, Dafford’s passion evolved from a personal drive to make great art into something broader. Community revitalization projects, from downtown Lafayette to small towns across the South and beyond, showed him how public art could shape identity, pride, and even economic growth.

“I realized I wasn’t just making pictures,” he explains. “I was helping communities see themselves and their history in a new way. That became my real mission.”

The influence of Lafayette and Acadiana runs through his work. From centuries-old oaks to prehistoric swamps, from the rhythms of French language and music to the fight to preserve Cajun culture in the face of homogenizing American culture, the landscape and people around him have been a lifelong inspiration.

“Growing up here gave me an inside understanding of who we are,” he says. “And it gave me a duty to help preserve and celebrate that.”

Dafford’s murals often carry social and environmental messages, whether protecting Louisiana’s wetlands, honoring the region’s industrial history, or capturing the stories of everyday people. For him, the impact is clearest when he sees strangers stop in front of his work years later and still be moved.

“There’s an energy tied up in the paint,” he reflects. “If it excites people, if it makes them proud of their place, then it’s working.”

As for advice to young artists, Dafford is direct. Keep at it. “It’s a lifetime commitment. America doesn’t always value art, so you’ll need a thick skin and the support of other artists. But if you love it, stick with it. It can shape your life in the best ways.”

Today, whether teaching, collaborating with his daughters, or dreaming of more experimental, multi-dimensional projects, Robert Dafford remains focused on one thing, making art that matters.

“I’ve grown into who I am through this work,” he says. “At the end of the day, it’s about community. Who we are, what we are, and how proud we can be of that.”
