Spend any time in Lafayette, and you’ll hear the phrase, “your mom and them”. It’s a colloquial term for family and friends, your social circle, your peeps. “How’s your mom and them?” You may hear or even get asked. Or, “I saw your mom and them at the grocery store.” I don’t think any cultural research has been conducted on the term, but my guess is that it stems from the tight Cajun family connections. My dad, for example, still “goes to town” with his brothers. It’s an outing! Anyway, the term doesn’t actually point to your mom specifically most of the time, but this time it does. Mom deserves to be taken out on the town; she deserves to spend time with her kids, whether they're grown or littles. So set aside a day each month for her to have a little fun. Here’s a breakdown of what Lafayette has to offer her throughout the year

Moncus Park Iris

Spring in Lafayette is nothing short of a love letter to the outdoors. The azaleas are showing off, the air is actually breathable, and the city comes alive with festivals almost every weekend.

Start the season right with a round of Mahjong at Maison de Mahj. This chic local mahjong house offers classes and leagues. It’s the perfect setting for a laid-back afternoon with a little intense competition. Bring a bottle of rosé and your competitive streak.

When the irises bloom at Moncus Park, the Louisiana Iris Festival turns one of Lafayette's most beloved green spaces into a celebration of color, local culture, and community. If your mom is a gardener, then she will love the guided tours, pro-led talks, and irises for sale to add to her own garden. Continue the theme with the Festival des Fleurs. Noted as “Lafayette’s Premier Garden Show & Sale”, the festival offers all things gardening from plants and shrubs to tools, birdfeeders, and supplies. Perfect for moms who love a beautifully landscaped yard.

For the bookworm mom, the Books Along the Teche Literary Festival is a must. Down in New Iberia, this festival brings together Southern authors, storytellers, and book lovers. The weekend features a book fair, author talks, and ticketed events. If you and your mom bond over books and good conversation, this one is for you.

Moncus Park Splash Pad

With Lafayette’s hot, humid, and relentless summer weather, the smartest thing you can do is take the fun indoors or out on the water.

Escape Room Lafayette is the kind of experience that reveals exactly who your mother is under pressure. Or a great way to find out she was secretly a spy this whole time. Will she be the one decoding the cipher while you pace? Will you both forget which clue you already used? Either way, you'll be laughing, scheming, and collaborating in a way that a Sunday brunch simply cannot replicate.

For something a little more nostalgic with a modern twist, Fun Nation Skating Rink on West Congress brings back all the retro joy of roller skating. Let mom relive her glory days on a set of quads. I bet she can skate circles around you.

If your mom has always been the adventurous type, take things vertical at Sky Craft Aerial Arts. This aerial arts studio offers beginner classes for both adults and kids in circus-inspired disciplines that will leave you both feeling a little stronger, a little braver, and a lot more impressive at dinner parties.

And for the ultimate cool-down, a membership or day pass at Red Lerille's Health & Racquet Club gives you access to one of Lafayette's best summer cool off spots with a lap pool, recreation pool, splash pad, lounge chairs, and covered areas. Though you'll want to time your visit for early morning or late afternoon, when the Louisiana sun is showing a little more restraint.

Southern Screen

Fall is Lafayette's golden hour. The humidity breaks, the festivals return, and the whole city seems to exhale. This is the season for slowing down and soaking it in.

The Southern Screen Film Festival is a standout fall event celebrating Southern storytelling through cinema. If your mamma considered herself a film buff, this festival gives you something to dress up for, debate over, and cherish long after the credits roll. And it's a fantastic way to discover local filmmakers, see indie screenings, and meet other film nerds.

A hike through the Acadiana Nature Station (1005 E. Alexander Street) is the kind of low-key afternoon that gives you just what you didn’t know you needed. Tucked into the heart of north Lafayette, this nature trail offers a peaceful, grounding walk that is especially lovely when the weather finally cooperates. Bring good walking shoes and better conversation.

Lafayette's antique and thrift store scene is a treasure hunt waiting to happen. This thrift store guide will point you toward the best spots in town. Whether your mom collects vintage jewelry, mid-century furniture, or simply enjoys the thrill of the find, an afternoon spent browsing is both budget-friendly and genuinely fun.

And as soon as November turns the corner, LARC's Acadian Village begins its beloved holiday light display, Noël Acadien. As the weather starts to cool, grab mom, a mug of hot chocolate, and a flannel jacket for a stroll through the lights of Acadian Village. Start a new tradition, or continue an old one, and walk through one of Lafayette's most magical seasonal experiences together.

Bonne Vie Macarons

Between Mardi Gras and Valentine’s Day, it can be difficult to stay away from sugar during a winter in Louisiana. Why not lean in and take her with you to share the treats?

Kick things off with a sweet decorating class at It's Just a Cookie. Their Valentine 's-season classes are a charming way to get hands-on with royal icing and buttercream while making something beautiful together. Spoiler: your mom will be better at it than you, and she won’t be subtle about it.

Reading while snacking on sweet treats? Ok. Bonne Vie Macarons Book Club is delightful and a great way to introduce mom to other bookworms. Picture this: a cute macaron shop, French-inspired pastries, and a curated reading community that takes both dessert and literature seriously. Share your hot take on the book you’re both reading and share dessert.

Celebrate Mardi Gras with a King Cake tasting adventure. This king cake guide maps out the city's finest offerings across bakeries whose take on king cake varies just as much as your and your mom’s preferences. Sample as many as your blood sugar allows, compare notes, declare a winner, and agree to come back and do it again next year.

Painted Bayou brings the classic paint-and-sip format to life. It is the kind of afternoon where even the most blocked creatives can unleash their imagination. They offer a variety of arts classes, including pottery, mosaics, and stained glass.

If mom considers herself artsy, then hit up the Hilliard Art Museum and the Acadiana Center for the Arts. The Hilliard has a rotating main exhibit with various openings and activities, while the AcA has several galleries and exhibits simultaneously.

Scrappie Studio is a local creative shop brimming with art supplies, stickers, and handmade goods that make wonderful gifts and even better afternoon browsing. If your mom has a creative streak, Scrappie offers classes, workshops, and weekly Sip N Paint nights.

No matter the season, spending time with “your mom and them” in Lafayette is all about making memories together. From festivals and food to creative classes and outdoor adventures, there’s always something new to experience side by side. Start planning your next outing, explore even more local favorites, and turn these ideas into traditions you’ll come back to year after year.
