Lafayette Travel has released the latest episode of its original video series Gumbo People, which highlights the artists, culture bearers, and professionals who help shape the parish’s cultural identity. Through cinematic portraits of local creatives, the series explores how generations of cultural influences have shaped Lafayette’s music, art, food, and traditions.

The newest episode spotlights Ben Pierce, a Lafayette-based photographer and executive director of Swamp Base, whose images of Louisiana’s swamps capture both the mystery and beauty of one of Acadiana’s most iconic landscapes. Known for his ability to transform the often-misunderstood swamp into a place of serenity and beauty, Pierce’s work celebrates the deep connection between Louisiana’s natural environment and its people.
"I don't shoot images for other people. However, I do love hearing other people's responses to my work, and my favorite responses are always ones that tie back into some really deep memory for them. You know, maybe it was a thought about fishing with their granddad or going down to their camp with their family, and if it brings back those kinds of emotions for somebody, those are the best kind of responses," said Pierce.

The Gumbo People series debuted in August with a feature on acclaimed artist Francis Pavy, followed by internationally renowned muralist Robert Dafford, and most recently, Michelle “Malentina” Colon. Each short film offers an intimate look into the lives and creative forces that make Lafayette a cultural hub, inspiring both locals and visitors to discover the region.
The Gumbo People series is available to watch at GumboPeople.com and will be promoted through Lafayette Travel’s social media channels throughout the year.
