Bakeries in Lafayette

When you walk through the doors of Poupart’s, it’s like stepping back in time. It’s one of Lafayette’s oldest bakeries. It has been French-family-owned since it’s inception in the 60s. Glass cases are filled with delicacies such as the Shoe-Sole pastry, fresh sourdough, cannolis, croissants, fruit tarts, and cheesecake. Other highlights include French butter, house cheese dip, custom-ordered cakes, seasonal king cakes, and consistently kind staff. Customers describe it as a decades-long tradition for visitors and locals alike.

Few things stop the scroll on Instagram like a well-lit image of a blueberry pistachio danish on Lucía Bakehouse’s profile. Started as a pop-up in 2020, Lucía is now a brick-and-mortar specializing in Viennois-style baking. Everything is delicious, but the standouts are Bombolonis (brioche-stuffed donuts), Kouign Amann (a boudin roll made with Best Stop boudin), and the mixed berry danish. Take a seat in the beautiful, Parisian-feeling space, but go early as they sell out fast. 

If Lucía is described as chic, then Straw Cove can be described as rustic. A wholesale bakery and flour mill (the only one of its kind in Louisiana), mills organic wheat on-site. Founded in 2022 by Morgan Angelle & Dené Carroll, both with deep Acadiana roots and bakery experience at Bellegarde Bakery in New Orleans. You can find their sourdough breads and the area's first real bagels in stores and restaurants across town. 

An institution since 1929! Ask any local about their favorite king cake, and most will answer, “Keller's!” Now 4th-generation family-owned, Keller’s Downtown offers more than king cakes. The cream puffs, lemon meringue pie, and petite fours are worth a try. Many customers admit the recipes have stayed consistent throughout the years, decades even. Not much has changed since it opened, even the interior decor; there’s definitely a nostalgic charm about Keller’s.

French macaron and dessert shop is now paired with Acadiana's first romance-only bookstore. The vibe is femme-mod (think floral, pink hues, and lots of texture) and is serious about macarons but fun and playful about everything else.

Owner Jermela "Mel" is self-taught and built her empire from scratch. She started baking custom cakes and now runs the storefront and bakery supply shop. Sweet Envie hosts cupcake and mimosas events, makes a mean chicken salad among other savory delights, takes custom cake orders, and offers a rotating menu of sweet treats. Sweet Envie proudly serves North Lafayette and surrounding communities.
