Lafayette, Louisiana is situated in the heartland of one of the country’s most culturally distinct regions. As the saying goes, there a certain “joie de vivre” (or exuberant enjoyment of life) that permeates everything from food to music to their friendly attitudes. And a visit won’t break the bank on your cheap weekend getaway in Louisiana.

Things to Do

There’s a lot of fun to be had in Cajun Country. The natural setting is ripe with mysterious, beautiful waterways and woodlands to explore. At over one million acres, the Atchafalaya Basin is home to otters, alligators, black bears, migratory birds, and hundreds more species. Book a swamp tour to get the most out of your visit.

Only a handful of areas in the USA can lay claim to their own musical genres, and southern Louisiana is one of those places. Zydeco and Cajun musical styles originated here, and their popularity has spread worldwide. The Rock ’n Bowl is a popular music spot that adds bowling to boot. The Blue Moon Saloon and Guesthouse is a top Lafayette venue with rooms to rent as well. You should also check out El Sid O’s, Fred’s in Mamou, and others via the busy music calendar.

There are so many great places to visit! Vermillionville and Acadian Village are historic parks that showcase the region’s history and past lifestyle with special events, folklife demonstrations, and musical entertainment. Just 45 minutes south lies Avery Island, home of the iconic Tabasco Sauce, where you can tour the factory and the 170-acre Jungle Gardens. For outdoor fun, head to Girard Park and enjoy a walking trail, disc golf course, and splash pad.

Where to Stay

Whether you desire a fun-filled holiday or a romantic weekend getaway, Lafayette has somewhere to suit you, from local B & B’s to national chains, cottages on the lake, and even camping sites. RV travelers should head to Bayou Wilderness RV Campground for a peaceful, well-maintained site to park your ride.
